Bar Coding for Sage on an iPad

Defacto launches DefCapture WMS solution iPad and iPhone users

Traditionally Warehouse Management (WMS) for Sage Line 500 and Sage 1000 dictated large add-on systems and ruggedized mobile devices with built in scanners, both of which came with expensive price tags. This was the only real solution for warehouse management tasks. The launch of DefCapture in 2007 changed this by adding options to scan single Sage transactions in a simple, uncomplicated manner using work station based scanning as well as mobile devices and reduced the cost of warehouse management solutions on both fronts.

With iPhones and iPads now common in the work place, Defacto offers a DefCapture solution for these devices. Users can immediately benefit as there are no extra licence fees for additional devices added to a DefCapture solution. Coupled with device set-up taking less than five minutes and no more complex than accessing a Wireless network at McDonalds, users can readily use their existing iPhones and iPads as supplementary DefCapture mobile devices.

With the addition of the DefCapture Scanner for iPhone and iPad, product code, box, carton and pallet labels and bin locations can be directly scanned for fast and accurate data entry.

“We see the iPad as a very plausible device for Laboratories, Clean Areas and Offices and even Light Engineering environments. The fact that many users already carry an iPhone or iPad means access to Sage and DefCapture information can be achieved with minimal or zero additional cost”, explains Alec Willis, Managing Director of Defacto.

For more "hostile" environments, Defacto continues to recommend the Motorola Symbol MC91xx range of ruggedized mobile computer devices which are built from ergonomic materials for dependable use in almost any environment and can operate within a temperature range of -4° to 50° C.

A typical DefCapture installation can now include a mixture of rugged mobile devices, work station based devices and iPhones and iPads offering flexibility and lower investment.

Now, for the first time, solutions are available for Sage Line 500 and Sage 1000 systems ranging from simple independent bar coded transactions right up to full Warehouse Management solutions with matching hardware solutions to suit any budget.

Datel Connect 2015

We will be showing how we can help get the best from your Sage ERP 1000 and Sage Line 500 solutions.

DefCapture - Tailored to your Requirements

DefCapture - Flexibility at your Finger Tips

DefCapture provides multiple options for configuration straight "out of the box". If you need a specific change we can do that too. In fact, using the DefCapture rapid development presentation layer, Defacto can create almost any custom work flow with DefCapture, for example, perform a cycle count inventory stock take on the back of a works order kitting issue.

Extending Sage using DefCapture

DefCapture can also provide additional features to extend your Sage installation. Inter-warehouse Transfer can handle multi-unit conversions and break down bulk into individual items. Put-Away can set inspection status. Bin to Bin can move stock allocated to Sage orders. On a larger scale, DefCapture has been used to extend Sage to handle serial numbers.

Sage and Very Large Numbers of Serialized Items

Sage Line 500 and Sage ERP 1000 offer built-in serial number tracking for products and items where the number of serial numbers processed per year is small to medium. But what happens when deliveries of tens of thousands of serial numbered items per drop has to be processed. This scenario offers particular challenges where batches (ranges) of serial number have to be moved in a single transaction.

Dave Usher, lead developer of the feature set for DefCapture, explains, “The inclusion of these new DefCapture features in collaboration with Jera and Vodacom brings new strength to the Sage flagship product range as it moves Line 500 and Sage ERP 1000 into areas not possible before handling very large volumes of serial numbers. We are now planning to develop menu based options to mirror the bar coded data capture versions."

During 2009 Defacto worked closely with Business Partner Jera based in Johannesburg to develop a DefCapture bar code scanning extension to enable Sage to support very large numbers of serialized items (VLNSI). The initial solution has now been installed at Vodacom in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) where it is running live handling millions of serialized Vodacom SIM cards as well as serialized telephone handsets.  Image

Using the solution we have developed and the experience we have gained of this kind of environment, the ambition is to roll out the same solution to other Vodacom sites in the near future.
